New book cover announcement

Today, I am beyond excited to share with you the design of my new book cover for The Customer Communication Formula.

My book has been available in three formats since its release in January 2021 (hardcover, paperback, and e-book). As a new author, I have learned many lessons in the last year about publishing a book. The lesson I am sharing with you is about the importance of creating a book cover that is visually appealing in a digital world. I have experienced highs and lows along this journey, but the journey was well worth it as I look at my new cover designed by Melinda Martin of Martin Publishing Services.

I have more than a thousand words to say about my experience with my book cover, but we know that a picture is worth a thousand words so I will share one instead.

This screenshot of my book on Amazon.com communicates the eye-opening experience I had when I looked at my book cover in the context of other book covers in the same category. The title and the sub-title do not “pop.” I soon realized that the cover needed a different graphic to communicate the value of a business book paired with the human touch.

So, I began the process of finding a new designer who shared my values of prioritizing human connections, delivering exceptional customer service, and balancing the art and science of design. With her authenticity and talent, Melinda Martin fit the bill. A piece of advice on her website resonated with me: 

6 seconds is the average amount of time your book cover has to make an impact. Make those 6 seconds count.

When I read her story on her website, I knew she would be interested in hearing my story. During our introductory online meeting, it was “like” at first sight. She listened to my purpose for writing the book and just as I predicted, she was interested in hearing my story. Melinda asked me to share 5 book covers that resonated with my style. It was my pleasure to select 5 book covers from her website, knowing that this was one of the best compliments I could give her. 

Melinda worked well with my entire team including my publisher and branding consultant. In fact, the branding consultant was so pleased, she had no suggestions for improvement. Importantly, while partnering with Melinda I developed some new principles that I will use going forward if I write another book.

One of those principles is, when designing a book cover, think about your book’s appearance in different formats:

  • In your hand 

  • In a thumbnail image online

  • On a bookshelf in a store 

  • In a store display

  • Featured in promotional materials  

Key takeaway: It takes a skilled designer to balance the requirements of all five formats.
